Are you playing it safe?

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Security is mostly a superstition.
It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of man as a whole
experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than
outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

~Helen Keller

Do you play it safe? I know I often do. Planning for all contingencies, working to avoid unforeseen disasters and being always vigilant are things I have learned to do well. I think these were natural inclinations and abilities I had that I sharpened over the years.

In earlier times, they balanced nicely with a strong desire for adventure. On occasion, they literally saved my life as well as others. But over the years, I slowly started playing it safe and tried to minimize risks. Looking back and after a lot of work on this, I now believe this playing it safe was very related to my not engaging my own Disquiet. I can remember times of feeling paralyzed by not knowing what to do because I was trying to minimize risk.

What are my goals?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

I have been tagged by 2 great blogs as part of a meme. DMiracle.com and NOW.com both tagged me to write about the 5-10 top goals that I have for my life.

What the heck did I just say? Let me translate: In the blogging world, called the blogosphere, blogs can actually kick off a world-wide conversation by sending other blogs a request to write about a particular subject. The articles are linked so that readers can see the entire web of articles and comments.

So this is a meme about goals. Here are mine. Like Dawud, my overarching goal is to take my last breath knowing I have lived life fully and have few regrets.

You should have your own Corporate Board

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

One of the critical areas I focus on when working with a client is to help him establish what I call his “structures of support”. This means creating and maintaining processes, systems and people to support his new way of living as he emerges from his Disquiet.

If you read the biographies of successful leaders, you will discover that most of them had mentors and advisors in their lives. I formalize this with some of my clients by tasking them to create their own corporate board. Just as a CEO would have a group of people with a vested interest in how successful he or she is doing, you can do the same.

Do you have good anger or bad anger?

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

mensj.jpgIn the April edition of Men’s Journal, Jason Fagone wrote an article, “The Upside of Anger“. He writes:

“Getting angry is part of being a man and it’s not always pretty. But psychologists now believe that sometimes a little anger can be a healthy thing”

How to know what you want

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

When you start to get in touch with your Disquiet, you may feel the heaviness of dissatisfaction with how your life is not going the way you want. You want it to change. But change to what? You know what you don’t want, but what do you really want? It’s a tough question.

When I coach a man with Disquiet, one of the biggest chunks of work is getting clarity on what he wants. I don’t mean general goals or just a desire for a more satisfying life. What I mean are specific goals. This can be really hard for someone to identify for themselves without some outside help.
