What are my goals?

I have been tagged by 2 great blogs as part of a meme. DMiracle.com and NOW.com both tagged me to write about the 5-10 top goals that I have for my life.

What the heck did I just say? Let me translate: In the blogging world, called the blogosphere, blogs can actually kick off a world-wide conversation by sending other blogs a request to write about a particular subject. The articles are linked so that readers can see the entire web of articles and comments.

So this is a meme about goals. Here are mine. Like Dawud, my overarching goal is to take my last breath knowing I have lived life fully and have few regrets.

1. I want to be the best dad and partner I can be. I work at this. And I have a ways to go. And I am enjoying and letting in more the signs that I have been doing a good job.

2. I want to have more fun and lightness in my life. I want the ratio of heavy seriousness to light, fun and adventure to shift more and more. In the Hindu tradition, it is custom for an aging person to withdraw from the “affairs of the world” and go inside. Many become priests as they get older. I want to adapt that model to becoming less serious and weighed down, and become lighter and see more of the fun and humor in these “affairs”.

3. I want my work to always reflect my deepest desire to help people become heir highest selves. It is becoming less important to what the job is or how I do it.

4. I want to always live close to nature. That is the source for me. It is one of the important churches in my life.

5. I want to find new ways to tap into my emerging wisdom. I have things to say. I have opinions. I have experience. As I get older, I am drawn to influencing and shaping outcomes more directly. It is a kind of shift from being a consultant to being more a builder.

6. I want to harness what I know about individual development and growth and apply it to larger social issues.

7. To return to India and Africa at least one more time. I experienced these two places as crucibles for humanity. A mixing of the beauty and sanctity of humanness with the raw abject poverty of body and spirit. The sharp contrasts to the senses and to the heart is so important for perspective.

8. To live as if I had only a year to live. I learned this form a friend who died from cancer. He blessed me with sharing his journey in the last 9 months of his life. I witnessed a transformation from a hard driving attorney to someone who relished sunsets and the smell of fresh cut grass. Thanks Mike.

How did I come up with these goals? Asking the questions and listening deeply. The same way we approach the Disquiet. Try it for yourself:

If you were to be able to say you achieved the wildest dreams in your life, what would they be? Ask yourself and listen - carefully and deeply.

Here is another related article that might help prime the pump: http://www.thedisquiet.com/newsletter/what-is-your-footprint/

And to continue this meme, I tag the following to do the same. Let’s see where the conversation goes!

GenPlus - Wendy writes about life at 50+

Shards of Consciousness - Rick explores the paths to consciousness and freedom

Heart of Business - Mark shows you how to succeed in a business dedicated to making a difference.

Conscious Cooperation - Stuart is bringing consciousness and peaceful communication to the construction industry

Engaging Brand - Anna is passionate about leadership.

Have fun you 5 - let’s s see what emerges!

I’ve already been tagged for this one, Dave. You can see the post at Lifetime Goals.

Put numbers 2 and 4 together, and you could become a forest dweller. :-)

I wonder how closely the type of goals people have for their life correlate with their age.

  2. Mark Silver Says:

Thanks for the tag, Dave! I’ve been musing about this one since I started seeing this crop up- I’m going to muse for a day or so, and post later this week.

    :)

  3. Dave Schoof Says:

Hi Rick - thanks for the link. I am glad you already did it! Great question about the correlation. Maybe folks can check that out as they read different lists. bring back your comments here!

Hi Mark, I look forward to it!

  4. Dawud Miracle Says:

Dave, love how you’ve shared yourself. Thank you so much for honoring us with your openness and honesty.

I hear you about enjoying more lightness. Everything in time I figure.

  5. Dave Schoof Says:

Thanks Dawud. I have been pleasantly surprised at what has opened up around the experience of writing this post.

There is something about “going public” that seems to amplify the exploration. I have been thinking a lot about these goals and ideas to start making them happen have been percolating up. I know the power of exploring and writing about them. I am impressed by the power of the public declaration.

So imagine the impact of hundreds of people doing this on their blogs and the thousands who might be inspired to do it as well!
