Being a Super Hero can be Disquieting

Earlier this week, I posted a funny self test you could take that rated which super hero you are based on ranking yourself with a bunch of questions. It was all done in fun and was light-hearted. But I have been thinking about it ever sense.

In the context of working with men around their Disquiet, some of those questions from that quiz kept coming back to me:

Here were some of them:

Are you very virtuous?

Are you obviously powerful?

Are you a hopeless romantic?

Do you have a good sense of humor?

Did you have a bad childhood?

Do you have a dark personality?

Are you good at reading people?

Do you value independence and privacy?

Do you like to be in the limelight?

Are you easily angered?

Are you a loner?

Do you have hidden strength?

Do you often hurt people without realizing it?

Have you achieved a lot from hard work?

And you answer these by rating how much or how little they describe you and I guess the combination identifies you as a particular super personality. Again this is all in fun.

But, somehow these also feel very related to the work here about the Disquiet. They seem to describe qualities that many of us have. There is a shadowy side to some of them that suggests suffering and edginess. And that sort of fits doesn’t it? Remember the darkness and suffering in Batman’s childhood and the loneliness of Superman? The confusion and anger of the Hulk?

And taken all together, what the questions are asking about form a constellation of sorts that captures some of the origins and flavors of men’s Disquiet. Being heroic calls for sacrifice, steel will and a kind of isolation. Now that is familiar turf isn’t it?

Ok, I have probably taken this baby boomer ride as far as it can go!
