Learning from the mistakes of others

And connecting at the same time!

I discovered an interesting brand-new website/blog called Only Human through the help of another great resource, LifeHack. This new site is a creative application of the social community phenomenon that is emerging on the Internet. This is how they describe themselves:

We Are Only Human is a web site dedicated to helping people from each other’s experiences. Only Human is a community where people share stories about mistakes they’ve made in life and their advice to others.

The premise is that its just as important to know what NOT to do, as what to do. Mistakes make the most compelling stories, the funniest jokes, the best movies and provide the easiest advice to accept because of their ability to evoke empathy. People naturally use stories about mistakes to pass on knowledge to their peers and to future generations.

Only Human is the first project developed by Thought & Theory.

You can browse by topics and read the stories folks have shared about mistakes they made and what they learned. Here are the topics so far:

This is much more than an online version of reality TV, this is an great way to learn. You know how we all appreciate it when a friend or colleague shares a screw up? There is the lesson, the tip, the tidbit that will help us. But also, there is the appreciation of knowing others mess up as well. This becomes another way to connect with our human-ness.

Keep an eye out as this site grows and the stories increase. I bet we will be able to see stories of mens’ Disquiet emerge. I cordially invite you to go there and share your story if you feel inclined. You can do it anonymously if you desire. I am going to try it. It will be interesting to see, but I suspect there is an intrinsic benefit to the contributor as well. Sometimes sharing such a story puts it in perspective for yourself while knowing it might help others. Takes informal mentoring to a whole new level doesn’t it?

One Response to “Learning from the mistakes of others”

Dave, that “Only Human” blog site is great. Talk about deja vu! It is comforting to see others making the same mistakes as I have over the years.
